Description:

Shotguns and Shock Infantry for Fall of the Samurai (FoTS)

Introduction

While FoTS does a good job of replicating the roles of levy, trained and experienced Line Infantry in the Boshin War, it does not include many Shock and Irregular Infantry types. This mod aims to add those units into the game. While this mod does not seek to be entirely historically accurate, effort has been made to base these units on real-world examples from other parts of the world during the mid to late 1800s.

This mod makes use of vanilla and DLC assets and keeps the units balanced within their respective tiers so that none of them are overpowered, but instead fill a role within the campaign and in skirmishes that presently remains unexplored. If you have ever wanted to add a little bit of shock and awe to your tactical toolbox on the battlefields of the Boshin War, then please click that subscribe button and hit the thumbs up so that more people see this mod.

Units

Sappers

Peasants armed with grenades; what more could you possibly want? They will get shredded if they go up against anything other than Levies in a straight up fight, and they will not last long in melee, but if you can get them into a flank while the enemy is distracted, they will impress.

Shotgun Infantry

These Shotgun wielding infantry bring devastating fire over short distances to the battlefield. Based on the Blunderbuss Cavalry unit from the Otomo clan in Shogun 2, this unit comes with Rapid Advance, allowing them to quickly close the ranged gap between them and rifle and musket units or to run away from melee infantry after firing a devastating volley. Shotgun Infantry will demolish Levy Infantry, beat Line Infantry and loose to SIR Infantry while barely inflicting any casualties.

Hand Mortars

Based off of Russian and Late-Ottoman troops, and modeled from the Hoja Hand Mortars of Vanilla, this unit provides the close range fire support of artilery with greater mobility and at a cheaper cost, but with much less range. Just watch out for that friendly fire and enjoy the carnage.

Future Additions

In the future, I intend on adding a Foreign Veteran unit from the USA modeled off of Irregular Cavalry forces employed during the American Civil War. If you have any ideas or suggestions based off of real-world examples (they do not have to have been present at any battles during the Boshin War, just accurate to the time period), then please let me know in the comments below.

Preemptively Asked Questions

While I do love comments (I really do!) here are the answers to some questions which you might have before giving this mod a try.

Does this mod make these units OP?

No. I tested this mod as much as I could in skirmish mode to ensure that these units did not suddenly outperform any and all opposition at their tier.

What do you mean by tiers?

A rough power level that every unit can be categorized into. Levy Infantry are Tier 1, Line Infantry are Tier 2, SIR Infantry are Tier 3 and Guard Infantry is Tier 4. You could argue that the Foreign Infantry are a Tier 5.

What real-world basis do these units have?

Some. They are mostly for fun, but all of these units did exist somewhere in the world during the Boshin War, just not necessarily in Japan.

Are you interested in adding more units?

Yes! Any suggestions? Please keep the era appropriate, but they do not have to have served in the Boshin War.

What is the WIP tag next to some units?

These are units that have been introduced but are not yet final. While other units will still receive balance and appearance updates, these WIP units are subject to many more changes in the future, or removal from the mod entirely. Give them a try and let me know what you think of them!
