Description:

Mechanically, EU4 asks us to choose between high seas combat ships, inland seas combat ships, and trade ships. Historically, the powers of the Mediterranean faced no such tradeoff. The same galleys produced by the Venetian Arsenal could be used to raid, trade, or go to war. This is a big part of how city states like Venice and Genoa could project their power. Their fleets switched roles depending on the needs of the times.

This demo mod is for testing out how that feels by giving Galleys 1 trade power, allowing them to protect trade during peacetime. Ducat for ducat, they are just as efficient at protecting trade as Light Ships but half as efficient when it comes to force limit or 1/4 when it comes to sailors. Depending on your situation, one may be better than the other. I think it’s a more interesting set of choices.

When you reach Dip Tech 10, you are faced with a new tradeoff. War Galleys have become specialized and give no trade power. Do you upgrade your Galleys to War Galleys, growing their combat but giving up their role in trade? Do you switch to Light Ships? Or do you continue along with your aging fleet, a fading power on the azure seas?

Tested on 1.28. Not compatible with any mods that change the Galley properties.

nb: Because of the way the game understands the trade power, you need at least one light ship in your fleet to start the Protect Trade mission. But once the fleet is going, your galleys do contribute trade power. No idea if the AI understands this.
