Description:

Teak was a popular coach body in the late 19th and early 20th century, especially on the east coast railways.

One of the key characteristics of these coaches were the large, stylised numbers on the doors designating class, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The compartments were often lavishly decorated with very comfy chairs in 1st class, and small benches with bare walls for 3rd class.

These lightweight teak bodied designs were ideal for the express trains of the era. Being hauled usually by locomotives called ‘Singles’, engines that had one large driving wheel, adhesion and acceleration were at a premium, and these coaches were designed for this kind of work.

In this mod, I have included 3 different designs of teak coach, adapted from the Urban Games 6 Wheeled Compartment Carriage. The capacities for the carriages are somewhat accurate, the 6 Wheeled Commuter carriage was usually used on trains from Hull to York, and from the north of London into the capital. Passengers would be crammed 5 or 6 wide on the plain wooden benches inside the carriage in order to get into the city for work.

Also included is a 4 wheeled variant from 1868, a reskin of my Express Passenger Carriage from the 4-2-0 Crampton mod. With a slight stat change, this small coach is ideal for high-speed inter-city travel.

Lastly is the 8 Wheeled Rigid-body Carriage from 1880. These coaches were used right up until the late 1930s, being hauled behind everything from the tiny ‘Single’ engines to the mighty A class Pacifics.
