S&DR ‘Derwent’ 0-6-0
In 1845, Timothy Hackworth ordered a class of 0-6-0 to his design for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. This engine may look much older than it is, since Hackworth sort of turned his back on the ‘Stephenson’ line of locomotive development after one of his engines, ‘Sans Pareil’, was beaten at the Rainhill Trials in 1829 by the Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’.
Remember, this was a contemporary of the LNWR ‘Crewe-type’ 2-2-2, Hackworth had a very old fashioned way of doing things. However what this engine lacks in looks and technology, it makes up for in brute force.
