Description:

I love my Great Eagles: their models, animations, sound effects… Sadly, their performance is severely lacking.

So I decided to Make Eagles Great Again.

My concept for them is based on the morale boost you see on the troops in the Lord of The Rings every time the eagles show up. I imagine the Lothern Sea Guards must feel something similar every time they go to battle, knowing they will fight under the cover of immense eagles capable of nose diving into the enemy ranks where the battle is thickest.

So here are my changes:

Entities: 5 (was 1).
Health: 931 x 5 (was 4655 x 1).
Normal Damage: 32 (was 47 x 5).
AP Damage: 47 (was 32 x 5).
New Abilities: Regeneration and Encourage.

While High Elves have air superiority in quality, a couple of dragons never gave me the impression they truly owned the skies. Now they do. Field a bunch of Great Eagle units, and see your army advance under a few dozen Great Eagles hovering over them!

Even though High Elf Great Eagles are now units of 5 entities, they have the same overall health and deal the same damage as before. I’ve inverted their Normal and AP values, so they now deal AP Damage, as most other units of their type. They have Regeneration (which also gives them vulnerability to fire) and Encourage. This means they have a +8 Leadership aura around them.

In my testing, they still do very little damage (you won’t see them causing casualties in the hundreds) and they are outperformed by many other 800-point units in the High Elf roster. But I found they now have a purpose. You send them where your troops’ morale is dropping, and their arrival has a quantifiable effect, which was my goal. Their amazing speed becomes, finally, useful.

Their charges, however, are now more impactful, since there are five 1300-mass entities crashing into the enemy, instead of just one, so they will deal more damage if you micro-manage them.

Finally, one of my biggest problems with Great Eagles was their painstakingly slow replenishment rate. Their increased entity count helps to fix the issue. Regeneration doesn’t hurt either.

And that’s it. I hope you enjoy the mod, and feel free to give me your feedback.
