The Dominion of Men is set during the Fourth Age of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It is based solidly upon the lore of The Lord of the Rings books and associated official works, but is set three-and-a-half centuries after the end of the War of the Ring. Themed around a little-known (and unfinished) story by J.R.R. Tolkien entitled The New Shadow, the modification focuses upon the rise of a dark cult among the Mannish peoples during the Fourth Age of Middle-earth
The Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor was reforged by King Elessar, or Aragorn II, in TA 3019. Its capital in the North is Annúminas, and in the South, Minas Anor (formerly Minas Tirith). At the beginning of the Fourth Age the Reunited Kingdom included all the lands of Gondor and Arnor. King Elessar was also overlord of the City-kingdom of Dale. After the death of Eldarion, Aragorn II’s son, the Reunited Kingdom began to weaken as a political entity and friendly rivals such as Dale began to expand. Today, over three-and-a-half centuries into the Fourth Age, the House of Telcontar is split, with the lands of Mordor and eastern Arnor lost to the self-proclaimed Kingdom of Adûnabâr. The Reunited Kingdom’s Fleet is weak from naval engagements with Corsair ships, and Gondor’s southern borders are threatened by the Haradrim. The people of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor hold true to their Dúnedanic culture.
The Kingdom of Adûnabâr is ruled by a scion of the same blood as the King of the Reunited Kingdom. It bears the Star of Eärendil on its banners, looking back to the glory that once was and that – they believe – has been lost. Among the people and leaders of Adûnabâr there are followers of a dark faction known as the Shadow Cult. This movement may grow if temples to this Cult are built, and access to darker forces made available…or it may diminish if the ways of the Dúnedain are preserved. The people of the Kingdom of Adûnabâr have a strong Dúnedanic heritage but the presence of the Shadow Cult has drawn many from the ways of its noble past.
