Dark Ages AD 458: The Age of Majorian 3.0
Greetings, Citizens of Rome
This is a historically accurate new version of one of my most popular modifications for TW: Atilla. The mod is during the early Dark Ages (AD 458) during the reign of the Western Roman Emperor Majorian – who ruled from late AD 457 to 461. Majorian’s reign over the Western Roman Empire was notable for that it oversaw the final attempts of the Western Empire to regain control over its lost territories.
This mod has been a work in progress for months although I still need to add missions to each faction, which will be a key feature in the 4.0 version successor version. This version however is a superior upgrade of my 2.3 version which has attained over 2500 current subscribers and 200+ people favoured it. This version incorporates all the of the improvements suggested by subscribers to the previous version in their reviews, comments and pieces of advice.
Key features:
– Starting map begins and reflects the world with historical accuracy to the date AD 458.
– Hun spawn script disabled.
– Nearly all major factions are playable
– Historically accurate characters and family trees.
– Many more changes to improve game play.
Introduction:
The year is AD 458. Following the division of the empire in AD 395, the Western Roman Empire has been in steep decline, owing to barbarian invasions, economic decline and the incompetent governance of the Theodosian dynasties emperors – Honorius and Valentinian III.
Yet while in steep decline, all is not lost. The defeat of Atilla the Hun at the battle of Chalons in AD 451 saw the practical elimination of the Hunnic threat. Atilla had already expended his treasury mustering every last man he could to fight at Chalons and lost. He then made his way for an assault of Italy that was doomed to fail, due to reasons such as the massive centralization of Roman forces in the province of Italia and disease and discontent among his own army. Pope Leo managed to use his skill in diplomacy to convince the Huns that the time was right to make peace and so Atilla retreated back to the lands beyond the Danube river. Atilla died on his wedding night of a nose bleed, which some have suspected to be caused by poison, the Hunnic empire disintegrated thereafter.
Now a new emperor has arisen to the throne of the Roman Empire in the West, his name is Majorian. He is an experienced army officer and his ambition is nothing less than the full restoration of the Roman Empire in the west. Yet while he is ambitious, there are enemies aplenty. To the east, Ostrogoths control Pannonia and much of Illyricum, to the north, Rugi and Alemanni control the lands beyond the Alps. In Gaul, Franks and Burgundians gear their kingdoms for the coming struggle. In the west, the Visigoths and Suebi control all of Hispania and south across the Mediterranean the Vandals raid and maraud the cities, towns and villages along the shores of the great sea.
Will Majorian restore Rome’s glory, or will Rome be unable to survive the threat of barbarian invasion ?…time shall reveal all.
