Designed to use the first smokeless round invented,the Lebel 1886 was based on previous navy rifles that France had been using.The 1886 became quickly outdated after the introduction of the also smokeless but far more advanced Gewehr 88,which also introduced an spring loaded box magazine,much faster than the Lebel’s underbarrel tubular magazine.The French army had planned to completely replace them with semi automatic rifles,but that was never possible due to a shortage of guns.
Having been outdated for over 30 years,by WW2 lots of Lebels were pressed into service due to the French military’s lack of weapons.By that point a number of the rifles had been shortened to the 1935 carbine variant,which was not only easier to carry,but also held less bullets due to the tubular design.
The rifle was used in WW2 by the French mainly,but also by the Germans,who gave some captured ones to occupation troops,and also by Italian and Soviet partisans,though it is not previsely known how they got there
