Originally designed in 1918 to replace the Mk1 1917 grenade,the Mk2 was formerly adopted in 1920.Millions were produced by WW2,and the most used variant was the HE (which in the 30’s had lost the "High explosive" of it’s name due to it becoming the main adopted variant).Prior to WW2,these HE grenades were painted bright yellow for identification,but the combat use proved that they made soldiers holding them an easier target,specially on the early American campaigns in the Pacific.During 1943 and 1944,all of them were painted in green,leaving an small yellow and red strips for indentification (full red body used to mean practice black powder grenade,this was replaced with a full blue paint).By late 1944,most were already painted,though during D Day some of the grenades used still had their bright yellow cover
