España – A Spanish Kingdoms Mod
The 1.6 Castle update fixed a few issues I had with Iberia in CK3, but I was still unsatisifed by the decisions available for spanish characters in the 867 start, so created this mod which fixes multiple issues and returns the content available in CK2.
The decisions to create the Kingdoms of Leon and Castille have been added based on the same decisions from CK2. I’ve also fixed inconsistencies with the create Portugal and Aragon decisions. The create Aragon decision was seemingly unfinished, and both decisions required more de jure land than was held by the respective kingdoms in real life when they were created. Further balance and reward changes have been made to both to line up with the decisions to create Leon and Castille.
The Unite Spanish Kingdoms decision has been nerfed. The requirements are harder to meet, and only the northern kingdoms can be assimilated, instead of the whole continent.
Additionally, like in CK2, there are some optional duchies/kingdoms that can be incorporated into your created kingdoms de jure territory if you completely control them when taking the decision. These are as follows:
Aragon: Barcelona
Castille: Toledo
Portugal: Beja, Algarve
Spain Unification: Kingdom of Navarra
The AI can use all of these decisions, which I have tested. The gold requirement for most of them is removed however, as is done in the vanilla decisions, and the Leon decision has different requirements, detailed below.
This mod works with or without the Fate of Iberia DLC. If you do have the DLC, some decisions will affect the current struggle.
This mod was made before the 1.6 update, which made a lot of changes to Iberia, and made some of the features in this mod redundant. I still felt there was room for improvement though so have updated this mod to reflect the changes.
The create Aragon decision was actually finished in the 1.6 update, but instead of being under-developed it is now over-developed and needlessly complex, as well as maintaining ahistorical requirements. Honestly it would be fine if it wasn’t inconsitent with the other create kingdom decisions, but I’d already made a modified version, which I’ve updated.
The decision to create Castille and Leon was sort of added in the 1.6 update, by way of the splitting the crown event. Castille was added to the de jure map, so if it is ever gained by way of gavelkind inheritance or title creation, the splitting the crown event is triggered and Asturias is replaced with Leon. This kind of makes historical sense since Leon was created after Asturias was divided among Alfonso the Great’s sons on his death in 910, but Castille wasn’t one of the titles, and wasn’t actually founded until 1065. Which brings me to my other gripe which is that Castille now exists as a de jure kingdom on the map in the 867 start date despite the fact it wasn’t founded until 200 years later. The CK3 team has usually done pretty well with historical accuracy, but this doesn’t feel right at all.
I’ve removed Castille from the de jure map on the 867 start date, and it can now only be created by the decision I’d already made, as can Leon.
I made additional changes to the Leon decision. It can now be activated without controlling the whole duchy of Leon, you just need to hold the duchy title, and the county of Leon. I made some changes to the requirements for the AI, firstly Alfonso III cannot activate this decision, only his successors. However the AI does not need to hold the duchy of Leon, just the county, otherwise they basically never activate it.
Note that the splitting the crown event will still happen if the kingdom of Castille is made before the kingdom of Leon, at which point Asturias will be replaced with Leon and the decision to create it will be made unavailable. This seemed thematically appropriate.
Additionally there was a special requirement added witht he DLC that allowed you to activate some of the create kingdom decisions during the opportunity phase of a struggle without being independant. This is a cool idea, but it’s incredibly overpowered, so I’ve removed it in favour of the originally "must be indepedant" requirement.
Since the 1.6 Castle update removes the Visigoth culture from the 867 start, I’ve removed the Visigoth culture split and kingdom features. I likely won’t bring these back unless an earlier start date is added where Visigoths still exist.
I thought about keeping the Kingdom of Toledo in incase people wanted to add it with cheats, but the 1.6 update also added a Visigoth Kingdom title which I’d recommend instead. Since I liked the eagle emblem I made for the Kingdom of Toledo, I’ve added it to the COA designer emblems incase anyone wants to use it. It is under animals, at the bottom.
This mod is mostly finished, but there is still some additions I might like to make.
– Add alternative Aragon creation decision for Catalans with Barcelona as it’s capital, renamed Catalonia.
– Show the optional duchies that can be included in kingdom creations in the relevant decisions.
The original plan for this mod included the creation of a Spanish culture once the Empire of Hispania is created, but given the cultural hybridisation options in the Fleur-de-Lis update, this no longer seems pertinent or necessary.
2.0
– The 1.6 update made a few features of this mod redundant:
– Removed Visigoth culture split expansion.
– Removed Kingdom of Toledo creation decision.
– Removed Kingdom of Toledo from the database.
– Updated the create Portugal, Leon, Castille and Aragon decisions to reflect the changes in the 1.6 update.
– Made additional balance changes to the above decisions.
– Removed Castille from the de jure map on the 867 start date, titles are now under Asturias as they were before.
– Added the Visigoth Eagle emblem from the COA for the Kingdom of Toledo to the COA designer.
– Added Spanish localisation.
1.0
– Comepletely rehauled the Visigoth culture split.
– Added new decisions to create the Kingdoms of Leon, Castille and Toledo.
– Fixed inconsistencies with the create Portugal and Aragon decisions.
– Nerfed Unite Spanish Kingdoms decision.
– Fixed base game bug where your family and court does not convert to your adopted culture in the event where you can adopt your leige’s new culture.
– Added cultural name for Hispania, which renames it "Spain", when owned by a character of Aragonese, Asturleonese, Castilian, Catalan, or Galician culture (as it was historically named after the unification of Castille and Aragon).
I’ve tested all the features in this mod, but I’m one person and cannot guarantee the stability. Use at your own risk.
If you come across any bugs/glitches, please let me know.
This mod was designed to be used on a new save. It should technically work on a current save but I have not tested this. Do so at your own risk.
Special thanks to Meighallo for the Spanish localisation.
