Description:

The fallback cubemap that has plagued incomplete and broken maps since 2004 finally gets a makeover! I made one that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb in most lighting conditions.

Now you can use broken maps without burning your eyes out before they’re fixed.

No more "glowing props"!

– Still ugly and wrong, but less ugly
– Works in LDR and HDR maps (using a single texture)
– Uses sky_day02_07 skybox from Half-Life 2
– Neutral color and low saturation
– Better sky/ground separation
– Nondescript ground appearance
– Similar overall luminosity (Doesn’t look any worse in dark areas than the original.)

Mappers, JUST BAKE YOUR %$@& CUBEMAPS

This DOES NOT magically "fix" broken or missing reflections in maps that haven’t baked/included their own cubemaps correctly. They will always look wrong until that happens.

They are very easy to add, even for beginners. You are a bad mapper if you don’t.
If you are seeing this texture somewhere, please tell the map author to bake their cubemaps.

Regardless, I hope this comes in handy for when the fallback cubemap does rear its ugly head.
