Designed to replace the Vetterli-Vitali,the Carcano was the main rifle of the Italian army during both WW1 and WW2.It was partially based on the Gewehr 88 and other successful rifles of the time,using the clasic Gewehr bolt and clip system.It’s 6mm ammo proved to be unreliable,specially in long ranges,but the Italians were never able to mass produce the replacement;althought they introduced a shortened version of the gun in 1938,more suitable for use in the battlefield than the original 1.2 meters long rifle.
These guns were sold or captured by many different countries,including Finland,Japan,Nationalist China,and Austria-Hungary.
After the Italian capitulation,the Germans continued to employ this rifle for their units in the peninsula,as they had already disarmed the local units.
