Developed from a makeshift variant created by the militias during the Paris Commune, the LMP 1889/16 (this version) was a further improved munition for manual throw. It was mostly used during WW1, and it was so successful that many nations copied the design (specially Russia and Germany, although the later was never able to deploy them in the war). Some of the Russian examples (similar in appearance, but with slightly different mechanics) made it to the Spanish civil war, being used by the Republicans mostly, although some were captured and used by the Nationalists. A very small quantity of weapons made their way into German hands in Spain, and were sent back to Germany for testing (specially the locally produced variant, the so called "Pedrolo", which included further simplifications in production), and it is believed that the Volkssturm were issued those in the final days
