Shikotan
Shikotan (from the Ainu word meaning "large populated area").
The largest island of the Lesser Kuril Islands. According to the federal structure of Russia, it is part of the Sakhalin Region as part of the South Kuril District within the administrative-territorial structure of the region and as part of the South Kuril Urban District within the municipal structure of the region. The island’s ownership by Russia is disputed by Japan, which considers it part of its Nemuro District of the Hokkaido Governorate.
