MK-16 is the first naval gun of the U.S. Navy to use an automatic loader. It is equipped on the Des Moines-class heavy cruisers. But with the advent of the missile age, the Des Moines-class cruisers, known as the last heavy cruisers, soon withdrew from the stage of history.
