May 17th 1741, the Austrian forces under Charles of Lorraine array themselves on a field south of the village of Chotusitz, he takes a defensive position and sets his men in a wide U shape, Leopold of Anhalt-Dessau, send ahead of Frederick of Prussia, waited for Frederick to arrive, as Fredericks men arrive, Leopold sends cavalry forward, to give Fredericks infantry and artillery time to deploy, Charles’ men opened fire on the cavalry and immediately most of his cavalry was killed, the remaining few fell back to join with Fredericks cavalry, annoyed with this setback, Frederick gave the order for the center, now under Leopold’s command to advance, they advanced under fire while Charles held positions, Leopold gave the order to retreat, but Charles sent his cavalry in between the blocks of infantry to chase down the fleeing Prussians, Frederick sent in his cavalry to cover Leopold’s retreat but many men fell on the way back to the Prussian lines. Seeing the great losses his men had taken, Frederick and his generals met to decide whether to continue the battle or withdraw, at this moment, Charles called a general advance, distracted by the Austrian infantry firing and advancing, they were unaware of a group of Austrians, sent from a post near the Saxon border, who opened fire on Frederick and his generals convening behind the artillery, several guards fell, Waldow dropped, having taken a ball through the eye, Frederick crumpled, shot through the lung. In a panic Buddenbrock and Leopold ran, the confusion in the rear started a general panic among the Prussians, who began to fall back in good order, as the word passed through the ranks that Frederick was dead, the men shattered, running off to the north. Charles capitalized on this and sent his cavalry in pursuit.
The Austrians had a force of approximately 30,000, the dead were around 2,500 with another couple thousand wounded, the Prussian force comprised around 28,000 men, around 7,000 died with around 10,000 prisoners, including Leopold. Following the Destruction at Chotusitz, Frederick’s brother Augustus became King Augustus I of Prussia.
Augustus realized that with the loss of nearly a quarter of the Prussian Army, they would be unable to continue the war and began negotiations with the Austrians, signing the Treaty of Breslau in December, this limited the Prussians to a standing army of 50,000 and required them to pay the Austrians reparations for the war, Augustus was unhappy with these terms and the death of his brother, but in the 7 months since Chotusitz, the French had been driven behind the Rhine and the Bavarians and Saxons had also been defeated, retreating to France and leaving their lands at the mercy of the Austrians, Francis had been crowned Holy Roman Emperor with his wife Maria Theresa as his Empress, and so Augustus recognized that further war was futile.
