HMS Cornwallis (61, 1932)
Cornwallis was designed to be an enlarged version of J3 battlecruiser, the main purpose was to build a sufficient fast battlecruiser armed with 16.5-inch guns, despite the shorter version of 9 guns plan being chosen, it was one of the most expensive battlecruiser Britain ever built at the time.
As completed, Cornwallis had an overall length of 963 feet (293.5 m), a maximum beam of 121 feet (37 m), and a draught of 33 feet (10 m) at deep load. It was the second largest ship in Royal Navy next to the Incomparable.
The Cornwallis were powered by four Parsons geared steam turbines, each driving one propeller shaft using steam provided by 24 Admiralty three-drum boiler. The battlecruiser’s turbines were designed to produce 188,000 shaft horsepower (140,200 kW), which would propel the ship at 33 knots (61 km/h; 38 mph)
Shortly after commissioning on 10 February 1932, Cornwallis become the flagship of China Station, under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir Howard Kelly. As the growing tension in Asia quickly escalate in 1937, Cornwallis was moved to Singapore for safety.
