Description:

Adds hydroponics bays for very dense concentrations of plants. As with vanilla hydroponics, loss of power will damage and eventually kill the plants contained within. These hydroponics bays can be uninstalled, but doing so will destroy their plants.

Acceptable growing temperature must still be maintained for plants to grow. If the temperature falls out of acceptable range, power is diverted from the internal lights to protect internal plants (but they cannot grow).

A sun lamp is not needed; these hydroponics systems have high power requirements for running their own lights.

How To Use:
  • Construct a hydroponics bay. (Production Tab)
  • Set a plant to grow.
  • Your growers will begin sowing.
    • The hydroponics bay will automatically store growing plants from the surface tray. Plants "disappearing" is normal for this phase.
    • Your growers will automatically stop sowing when the hydroponics bay is at capacity.
  • When the plants are mature, they will be returned to the surface tray continuously. Your farmers will begin to harvest them.
  • If you change crops while growing or harvesting, the new crop will be sown once the current batch has been fully harvested. If you change crops while sowing, the current batch will be destroyed and the system will switch to the new crop immediately.

High Density Hydroponics Bay
  • 80 plants within a large 2×4 bay.
  • Requires a little plasteel.
  • Consumes a large amount of power.
  • Must be researched after hydroponics

Hyper Density Hydroponics Bay
  • 240 plants within a very large, 2×6 bay.
  • May bottleneck with fast growing crops. Long term, high yield crops are recommended.
  • Requires advanced components and plasteel.
  • Consumes an enormous amount of power, but it is the most efficient in terms of watts-per-plant.
  • Must be researched after hydroponics and high density growth
  • Optimization: If you plant a fast growing crop in this, such as rice, you may spend more time sowing the plant than it takes to mature. To make the best use of this, try crops with a longer growth cycle! Also please note: the manpower requirements to use this efficiently are very high – with a smaller crew, you may be better served using the smaller hydroponics bay.

Mini Hydroponics Bay

Great for starting in extreme biomes with no growing season. If you’re not fond of cannibalism, anyways.

  • 16 plants within 4 cells
  • Cheap construction. Relatively.
  • Power cost is high but manageable for early game. Least efficient in terms of watts-per-plant
  • No research required on Crashlanded start (electricity is required so tribals won’t see it).

Lastly, HDH enables more vanilla crops to be grown in hydroponics bays. If you don’t want this feature, please delete the "Patches" folder included with the mod.

Compatibility:

HDH is very self contained; vanilla hydroponics aren’t touched, no game systems are patched. New crops that use vanilla game mechanics should work OK and overall, this mod should not conflict with the vast majority of other mods. However, modded crops with custom code are unlikely to consider the possibility of their crops despawning while they grow and respawning when they’re done.

There have been some reported incompatibilities with modded crops that have special mechanics. For example, plants that remain after being harvested; using these with High Density Hydroponics is not recommend.

OMG this is so OP!:
  • First, consider that HDH is meant to allow extreme biome starts without resorting to cannibalism – it is balanced around that, not a temperate zone with generous growing seasons.
  • Further, this mod does not affect the manpower requirements of agriculture. If you can’t effectively crew a large field, you won’t be able to effectively handle the high density options.
  • Lastly, when using HDH, you will have to build out a lot more power infrastructure compared to vanilla.

But as always, no one’s required to use it. Constructive criticism and suggestions are always welcome.
