Description:

Play as a one-eared panda who needs to stay in constant motion. She is very tired.

=======================

Character Overview

=======================

Strengths:
– Base-cast-feeling movement and normals.
– Incredible pressure with specials.
– Solid kill moves.
– Wide variety of zoning tools.

Weaknesses:
– Pretty average speed.
– Consistent but predictable recovery.
– Simple grounded moves.
– Scrambles are not advantageous.

Hexwhize is a zoner, first and foremost, but that doesn’t mean she is completely pigeonholed into that style of game. Her normals are able to compete with some base-cast buttons, so don’t be afraid to mix it up. Her specials are able to be summoned around the opponent once you have them marked, and it’s her central gimmick. It provides many different followups and mixups you wouldn’t have access to otherwise, so try to keep the opponent marked as much as you can! The mark will be removed once a hitbox 10% or stronger damages Hexwhize. If the mark isn’t on any other player, the specials will spawn at a fixed distance. Sometimes that may be advantageous!

Though her recovery is pretty straightforward, you can press the shield button to end the animation early and drop down… or press any direction with shield to gain a small boost! It’s barely a quarter of how high the tentacle can fling you, but it’s a good way to mix up your recovery.

Downtilt is a two part move, make sure to test when it’s best to use both hitboxes!

Upstrong has a small hit at the start which directs unlucky opponents into the looming tentacle ahead. While this move has use on its own, it’s made much better when used at the ledge.

Downstrong may function a lot like Kragg’s downspecial, but it has quite a bit more knockback. It can easily send you off the top at higher %’s if you aren’t careful!

Jab 3 is a killmove. Yeah.

Hexwhize, The Living Link

==============================

Despite being granted enormous power and protection by an otherworldly creature, Hexwhize grows weary of being directed by such an uncaring overseer. Though she obeys, keeping the link between them in constant motion, she longs to be freed and catch up on some sleep… but not as much as she longs to keep this power.

Credits

========

Ydrick – Wrote most of the code Hexwhize uses. Taught me from scratch how coding even works. High patience despite not being into my endless struggles sometimes. He was also mostly the inspiration to even take the first steps in making a character, due to how much he put into his own character Suitcase. So, Hexwhize would not exist in multiple ways without him. Very thankful.

Shengon – Helped a lot with color, feedback, and being the single person motivated to fix the downstrong issues that halted the character for a few weeks. Who knows if Hexwhize would have been finished without getting over that issue.

Thine – Made multiple cool backgrounds for the preview image, including the one that got used. Super cool of him to whip those up like he did.

ItsACat – Some of the best test games, really helping expose some of the holes in the character. Also helped a bit with a part of the preview image I was blind to.

LBO – Good test games and good feedback on certain aspects of the character that were confused. They might still be, but they’re a little better thanks to him.

BumbleBomb – First person to see the character who wasn’t working on it. Provided some very valuable outsider feedback that shaped Hexwhize into what she is now.

JustAMirage – Helped finish the preview image much more quickly and better than I ever could have.

Delta Parallax – Helped a lot with the tracking system, as well as crushing a couple bugs.

Known Issues

================

– With 3+ player games, mark sometimes doesn’t transfer from player to player properly.
– Mark doesn’t properly reapply to new bots in playtest.

Thoughts

===========

Thanks for playing this sad panda. She was challenging to work on due to having zero experience in coding/pixel art, but overall seeing her moving on the screen was incredibly rewarding and kept me going. Hopefully it’s alright for my first try.

My initial inspiration to start this character came from Nu-13 in Blazblue. That was the starting point for Hexwhize as an idea, and if you’re familiar with the character, the specials should be a somewhat familiar concept.

As a base-cast player for about 5 years, playing at every different level, and even making the Top 50 at my most active, I couldn’t help but use that as my reference point. I hope this character scratches the lacking base-cast itch for some workshop players. The number one thing I noticed about most workshop characters is their general movement felt off. That was my biggest goal with Hexwhize, I wanted her to "feel" like a base-cast character. Whether or not her actual gameplay is there, that’s up for debate I guess!

Once again thanks for giving the character a chance. It was thanks to the credits above she even got finished.
