Description:
Magnifient, dopey, feathery mounds of friendship.

The humble Giant Dodo is another of Dwarfkind’s best friends; as sturdy and quick as a horse, with the loveably dopey charm of a yak.

Aside from being an all-round work animal, these mighty beasts can be ridden into combat. Free breakfast from their nests is just a feather-menaced bonus!

Installation:

Make sure to click the Mods button on the bottom right when you create a world! Simply installing a mod for DF won’t activate it.
You can force mods into existing saves by injecting the raws, but please only do so at your own risk and know-how.

Features:
  • Dodos do not need to graze in a Pasture!
  • Act as both pest control and pest distribution – digging up and eating anything they can find
  • They can be kept as pets, trained for combat, used as mounts (Adventure Mode) and wagon-pullers
  • Male and female Dodos have different sprites to easily recognise them at a glance
  • Dwarves don’t quite have the tech to desex them – only you can prevent Dodosplosions!
  • Several PREFSTRINGS will allow your Dwarves to love them just as much as you do (hopefully!)

Lore:

These great birds of burden aren’t often found in the wild; their domestication by early settlers having pushed their feral cousins deeper into the thickest of rainforests and the tallest of mountain ranges.

They are greatly prized for the male’s rainbow plumage and strikingly colourful head-crest, while the gray female’s reliable egg production has fed many through the coldest winters. They are known for their tender nature, both to their own young and their handlers, fiercely defending their nests – and the homestead about it – with their lives, often to their own demise.

Their large eggs are notoriously hard as stone, but for good reason; while the shell itself weighs a whopping 1 kilo, the chick inside will rapidly grow to 5 kilos, which strains the egg enough for it to break at full development. So, rather than have to crack a way out with their little beaks, the chicks surprise their handlers by simply exploding out of their shells once they’re ready.

Whether you love them for their character, their looks, or their industrious potential, these birds will make themselves a cozy home just about anywhere, if you let them.

To Do/To Learn:
  • Bigger Spritework (32×32 currently)
  • Better Spritework (ongoing)
  • Armoured Dodos (War trained visual variant)
  • Special Dodo craftables (crest feather crafts? dodo leg roasts?)

Important note for current dodo breeders when updating: new versions may cause CTDs when viewing the descriptions of dodos in existing saves. I’m not sure why it happened to me, but hopefully it was just a one-off case. They still function perfectly fine in existing worlds besides, so don’t forget to save your Timelines often!
