Bug Out Kit
Some people are simply more prepared than others. Maybe we were secretly hoping for this day to come… or, ya’know, maybe we were just incredibly paranoid?
A first attempt at Zomboid modding, by someone who has no idea what the heck they’re doing! I used BeatlJoe’s mod "Prepper Equipment" to figure out how to create my own version. I am grateful that they allowed me to do this as I really enjoyed it. The trait’s UI icon is also from BeatlJoe’s mod, mainly because I have no idea how to create one of my own at the moment.
This is a an entirely unbalanced trait, but this is also my first version of it. I am really considering a more refined version and I am also considering a version that uses some items from mods that I personally use a lot. For now though, this is it (I don’t even use the mod myself outside of testing because of balancing issues, unless I am doing a random wilderness/cabin start)
The trait only costs 2 points to use currently; it will spawn the following items in their respective containers (within your main inventory) listed below:
– A Large Backpack with: 1x bourbon bottle with water (12.5 units – according to wiki), 1x box of matches (10 units), 1x hunting knife, 1x dish towel, 1x scissors, 1x hammer (claw not ball-peen), 1x saw (hacksaw not handsaw), 1x empty cooking pot, 1x hand axe, 1x screwdriver & 1x hand torch (full battery).
– A Sewing Kit with: 1x needle (standard not suture), 1x thread (10 units), farming magazine, herbalist magazine, generator magazine, standard models magazine, commercial models magazine, performance models magazine, 3x comic book, 2x bandage, 1x fishing line, 1x fishing tackle, angler usa magazine volume one, 1x wood glue (5 units), 1x duct tape (4 units), 1x bottle of disinfectant (10 units), 1x pencil & 1x eraser.
– A Seed Bag with: 1x can opener, 2x beef jerky, 1x can of soup, 2x can of beer, 1x chocolate bar, 1x packet of cabbage seeds & 1x trowel.
Additional information:
– The trait should work with existing saves, showing up when you create your next character on that save.
– I have no idea if this is safe to remove mid-save, it doesn’t do anything other than add the trait to the character creation screen; the trait itself only gives you vanilla items and has no additional effect beyond that.
– It is very unlikely to work on multiplayer, mainly because i did not create any multiplayer files, if that is even a thing. I don’t even know how to create a mod for multiplayer.
– Feel free to give suggestions, this mod is primarily for personal use, but I will consider expanding it if I see reason to. Just know that any future versions will aim to be properly balanced unlike this first one.
Known Issues:
– I haven’t encountered any issues with the mod myself yet, but please do let me know of any you experience.
Final notes:
Currently I don’t really recommend using this mod for a normal run (especially not if it is your first time playing as it will give you a very different experience to what the true zomboid experience would be), at least not until there is a more balanced version. However if you use it in a run along with a mod for wilderness or cabin spawns it feels like a much more logical and viable trait – the cheap cost of it is definitely unbalanced either way though.
I have added a link to the mod BeatlJoe made below, simply because it is very well balanced and a much more logical starter kit trait, with several (four if I recall correctly) options to chose from – and because I couldn’t have made this without their permission to reference their own mod structure.
