After the second world war, the Belgians were once again ready to build up their nation. When the cold war began to arise, the Belgians were being pulled into the western sphere. Both the government and the king made great efforts to persuade the Belgian public into supporting this alliance.
This however did not work. The Belgian people were tired of its neighboring countries using Belgium as their battlefield and deciding how to rule their nation. Being forced into Catholicism by the Spanish, forced into a king by the English, and both the French and Dutch tried to convert the country to their languages. The Belgians had enough of the western countries meddling with their affairs.
This resulted in the emergence of extreme political movements of which the communist party was the biggest. After the election of 19(60/70/80) the coalition of the Wallonian communist party and the Flemish party for communism had enough support to officially abolish the kingdom and instate a communist republic in its place.
The initial response of NATO was aggressive with an immediate allocation of American troops all around the Belgian border. The Belgians however had yet to use their most powerful weapon: political and diplomatic compromise. Using clever diplomatic negotiations the government managed to sign a treaty with both NATO and the USSR in which Belgium will be a demilitarized zone with no weapons manufacturing, a trade agreement with both the NATO and the USSR is established with the port of Antwerp as a guaranteed trade route with the USSR, and the country is allowed to use nuclear technology for civil purposes.
Now the external crisis is averted, it is up to you to guide the Belgians into an age of communist paradise.
