Introduction & Contents

It’s been a while since a mod that reworked combat for FOTE has been released so I decided to do the community still playing FOTE in 2022 a favor they deserve. This mod is essentially a continuation and more or less a fork of Arthalion’s "Enhanced Battles for FOTE" combined with some elements of wibblywobblywonder’s "Toggled high-arcing shot" as well as some of my own tweaks. To be clear I do not take any credit for the mostly borrowed content of this particular mod.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO PLAY WITH "AI" Mod for better experience in campaign as well.

Everything is explained in detail below.
  • Matched combat is mostly eliminated, but they do happen very occasionally (10~15% chance). I did this so combat is more "honest" in how it plays out and units do not get isolated by themselves out of formation constantly.
  • Whilst combat is slightly slower than vanilla FOTE, it is nowhere nearly as slow as it is in Arthalion’s original modifications. Units with less than 10% of their total unit strength are more likely to break unless they are elite units with very high morale.
  • All units have less variability in health compared to vanilla. Shields also no longer add armour to units but has higher missile block chance and melee defense, and only the actual armour of the unit themselves matter in combat. This makes comparing units much more consistent. It just makes no sense that shields added a second layer of armour, as though every successful attack in melee pierced both the shield and the armour of the bearer. This not only helps combat last longer but further boosts the effect of shieldwall and spearwall.
  • Armor gains resistance to missiles as they increase in value. You will notice that elite units with the best armour available such as cataphracts won’t be as easy to bring down with just arrows compared to light units. Javelins or other horse archers will deal much better damage against heavily armoured units.
  • All heavy shot has been converted into "high-arcing shots" which let you shoot projectiles at a higher arc and longer range but at less damage.
  • Weapon damage has been generally reduced to make combat last a bit longer without changing existing armor values. This will also make fortifications last a bit longer. Furthermore, "vs X" bonuses for various weapon types such as bonus vs infantry for swords has been leveled so differences between the various troop tiers are smaller. Elite troops will no longer have arbitrarily much stronger weapon damage than lower tier troops. This, coupled with the reduction of health variation makes for a much more consistent understanding of unit stats.
  • This might upset some people, but formed attack is mostly removed. This was because formed attack, while it makes units look good in formation, actually makes them less effective in combat against a unit without formed attack, and the AI also doesn’t know how to use it, leave alone turn it off in situations where it’d be better.
  • You’ll be surprised to know that in actuality none of the infantry formations except pike wall actually work in Attila and all its mods. Something is fundamentally wrong with how infantry formations like shieldwall or spearwall work so it, along with formed attack. makes units perform worse than they would without it.

To make this tragic "bug" of bad design less bothersome for the player I buffed both formations slightly so at the very least units will hold off against cavalry charges better and last longer in combat even if they don’t get as many kills.

  • The rest of the changes are the slightly tweaked but mostly the same as the ones listed in Arthalion’s "Enhanced Battles for FOTE" so refer to the link if you are curious.

Installation & Compatibility
  • This mod is only compatible with FOTE. Do not use with other overhaul mods.
  • To install, first subscribe to this mod, and place this mod above the 2 FOTE parts in the mod launcher.
  • If you are playing FOTE with Europa Perdita Reloaded and other optional submods that go with it, simply place this mod above all of them.
  • This mod is save game compatible, and will likely be compatible with all future versions of FOTE. I will update this mod should the combat system of vanilla FOTE be overhauled but I don’t think that will ever happen.
  • Although this mod will be multiplayer compatible, multiplayer is often a very buggy process that I will not be able help much should it become an issue. All I can say regarding this is make sure both parties have the identical setup and mod load order when attempting multiplayer.
