Ultimately laser point defense should be more powerful without being too obscenely overpowered. Particle beam point defense should now be more of a lateral upgrade to base laser point defense, with some minor benefits and negatives compared to arc point defense, and be inferior to phaser point defense. Alien point defense should be roughly equivalent to arc point defense. Phaser point defense should be top dog, without making missiles entirely irrelevant.

As a note, point defense is generally going to be good bang for your buck, especially with overlapping fields of fire. It’s worth remembering point defense is spending a slot on *zero* firepower – it cannot attack. A ship equipped solely with point defense cannot do anything to the enemy. As effective as point defense is, it is easily overcome by plasma which can’t be shot down, and high RoF weapons like rails and coilguns should be pretty good at getting through. Aliens may have trouble with mag cannon rounds because they’re allergic to not performing ridiculous maneuvers which don’t keep their nose pointed at something, but eh.
