Medieval 533 AD : Age of Justinian
This mod allows you to play The Last Roman DLC and the units and factions in this DLC on the Grand campaign map. It is about the last attempts of Emperor Justinianus to regain control of the old western lands which succumbed to barbarian invasions after his accession to the throne of the Roman Empire in the east. The start date of the mod is 533 AD.
Justinian I, also known as Justinian the Great, was Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565.
His rule is known for his ambitious but only partially realized renovatio imperii, or "restoration of the Empire." This ambition is expressed in the partial retake of the lands of the defunct Western Roman Empire. His general, Belisarius, quickly conquered the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa. Later, Belisarius, Narses, and other generals conquered the Ostrogothic Kingdom, restoring Dalmatia, Sicily, Italy, and Rome to the empire after more than half a century of Ostrogothic rule. Praetorian prefect Liberius reclaimed the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula and established the province of Spania. These expeditions re-established Roman control of the western Mediterranean, increasing the Empire’s annual income by one million solidi. During the reign of Justinian, he also subdued the Tzani, a people on the eastern shore of the Black Sea that had never been under Roman rule. In the east, it struggled with the Sassanid Empire during the reign of Kubad I and later during the reign of Khosrow I; This second conflict began in part because of his western ambitions.
An even more resonant aspect of his legacy was the Corpus Iuris Civilis, a uniform rewriting of Roman law that was still the basis of civil law in many modern states. His reign also marks the burgeoning Byzantine culture, and his construction program produced works such as Hagia Sophia. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is called "Emperor Saint Justinian". Because of his restoration activities, Justinian is sometimes referred to in mid-20th century historiography as the "Last Roman".
