Medieval 634 AD: Age of Heraclius
This mod is about the reign of Roman Emperor Heraclius on the grand campaign map. In this period, the Islamic conquests with the emergence of Islam include the wars of the Rashidun Caliphate, the Roman Empire and the Sassanid Empire. The starting date of the mod is 634 AD.
By 630 the Arabs had united all the tribes of the Hejaz, which had previously been too divided to pose a serious military challenge to the Byzantines or Persians. They formed one of the most powerful states in the region. The first conflict between the Byzantines and the Arabs was the Battle of Mute in September 629. A small Arab fighting force attacked the province of Arabia in response to the murder of the Arab ambassador by the Ghassanid Roman governor, but they were repulsed. Since the conflict was a Byzantine victory, there was no apparent reason to change the military organization of the region. The Roman army was not accustomed to fighting Arab armies on a large scale, like Islamic forces, which had no previous experience in the Hejaz conflicts with the Romans. Even Maurice’s Strategicon, a war manual lauded for the diversity of enemies it encompasses, does not mention the war against the Arabs at length. The religious zeal of the Arab army, a new development following the rise of Islam, ultimately contributed to the success of Islam in its campaigns against the Romans.
The following year, the Arabs took Al-Karak and launched an attack on Arabah south of Lake Tabariya. Other raids entered the Negev and reached Gaza. The Battle of Yarmouk in 636 resulted in a crushing defeat for the larger Byzantine army; Within three years, the Levant was lost again. Heraclius died of an illness on February 11, 641, and most of Egypt had fallen by then.
