Taq Kasra, Iwan al-Mada’in, Arch of Ctesiphon, all refer to the same palace of Sassanid Empire on the bank of the Tigris River – or all that remains on the ground. The founder of the palace was commonly attributed to either Shapur I or Khosrow I. On the iwan’s frontal facade is a monumental arch that stretches about 37m high and 50m long. The palace structure mostly fell apart due to a combination of natural disasters and man-made demolitions, but the archway stood the test of time. The arch was described by many poets in the Islamic period, as both a symbol of Sassanid Empire’s splendor, as well as a reminder of the ravages of time.
