Scaling Research Costs – Choose Your Scaling
A common problem with the game at this time is that all empires eventually become the same because they all eventually unlock the same tomes.
This mod provides one possible way to address this by increasing the cost of all research for an empire for each tome they unlock. There are a few different types of scaling (below) and you will be able to select which type you’d like at the beginning of each new game via a story event.
This mod:
– Does not modify any vanilla RPKs.
– Is compatible with tomes added via other mods.
– Affects both the AI and human players.
– Was inspired by Askarus.
– Benefitted greatly from Badok’s modding experience.
Scaling Methods:
– Flat 5%: A 5% increase in research costs per tome unlocked.
– Flat 10%: A 10% increase in research costs per tome unlocked.
– Flat Tiered:
— T1 – 5% for the frist 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T1 tome unlocked.
— T2 – 10% for the first 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T2 tome unlocked.
— T3 – 15% for the first 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T3 tome unlocked.
— T4 – 20% for the first 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T4 tome unlocked.
— T5 – 25% for the first 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T5 tome unlocked.
— T6+ – 30% for the first 2 tomes. Increases by 5% for every 3rd T6 (or greater) tome unlocked.
– Askarus Tiered: (Exponential)
— T1 – 5% for the frist T1 tome. Increases by 50% for every T1 tome after.
— T2 – 6% for the frist T2 tome. Increases by 50% for every T2 tome after.
— T3 – 7% for the frist T3 tome. Increases by 50% for every T3 tome after.
— T4 – 10% for the frist T4 tome. Increases by 50% for every T4 tome after.
— T5 – 20% for the frist T5 tome. Increases by 50% for every T5 tome after.
— T6+ – 30% for the frist T6 tome. Increases by 50% for every T6 tome after.
(T5 and T6+ assume that mods allow more than 1 T5 tome and create tomes greater than T5.)
Only 1 scaling method can be chosen. And only the hosting player is asked to choose for all other players. All scaling methods are prepared for tomes that are greater than tier 5. Cost increases are only applied to the base (original) cost of the research items and not to the increased cost from other increases.
I’ve created a small anonymous poll where we can select our most used scaling option and see what others prefer as well: https://forms.gle/c5WwMdKGheHQML3r9
