Yugoslavian Soldiers
After WWII, the Yugoslavian People’s Army (JNA) was the 4th biggest army in Europe. In case of an alien invasion, they would be an important source of equipment and manpower to Humanity’s efforts.
This mod adds Yugoslavian soldiers, with names that reflect the ethnical diversity of the Yugoslavia in 1979.
Features:
– 111 male first names
– 90 female first names
– 85 surnames
– The following ethnical backgrounds for names are in this mod:
– Serbs/Montenegrins
– Croats
– Bosniaks
– Slovenes
– Macedonians
– Albanians
– 3 regiments whose existance I’m not completely sure of, but couldn’t find much information online.
– No war experience, since between WWII and the 90s, there was no major conflict where Yugoslavians fought, taht I’m aware of.
Notes:
The different ethnic backgrounds don’t have the same amount of names, but are instead loosely based on the percentage of population of their socialist republic in relation to the total of Yugoslavia. For example, in surnames the percentages (the sum isn’t 100% because they overlap) are the following:
Serb/Montenegrin – 43%
Croat – 49%
Bosniak – 20%
Slovene – 13%
Albanian – 6%
Macedonian – 9%
Since it’s impossible to link first names to surnames, most of the times you’ll see soldiers with a mix of ethnicities in their first and surname. Not that uncommon in Yugoslavia, though.
Some ethnicities share first names (Serbs with Croats (almost all the names) and in some way Macedonians too), others have very unique names (Bosniaks and Albanians).
For Slovenes i tried choosing some first names that have some Italian/Austrian influence to make them stand out as Slovenes. As for Macedonians, most Serb/Croat names are used by them, but i tried to get a few Bulgarian origin first names to make them stand out as Macedonian.
Surnames are different, as it is usually easier to tell where they are from. Still, some overlap.
Finally, it’s obvious I’m not from these countries and my source for the names was the internet as well as some personal experience, so I am sure there’s bound to be horrible spelling mistakes or names that are very uncommon. My main problem was how to translate the special characters of the South Slavic script into to the limited character set Xenonauts have.
