Costa Del Tesoro was always as an unstable island nation, mostly spurring from the repeated claims of it’s southern island, Isla Ambar by foreign powers…
In 1625, the formidable English naval fleet under the command of Captain Geoffrey Blackthorn, seized the smaller island from Spanish defenders. Blackthorn, an ambitious explorer and privateer, renamed this newly acquired land "Blackthorn’s Haven."
Blackthorn’s Haven quickly gained a nefarious reputation as a pirate haven. The hidden coves and treacherous reefs surrounding the island made it an ideal base for pirates from all corners of the Caribbean. The island was particularly popular for smugglers, who’d use the island as a means to bypass Costa Del Tesoro’s high tariffs and taxes on tobacco and sugar, which only further exacerbated tensions between the smaller island and the mainland as time went on.
As news of Blackthorn’s Haven spread, tension escalated between Costa Del Tesoro and the pirate village of Kings Landing. Raids and skirmishes became a common occurrence between the two as Tesoro began to stage counter raids against the island in the hope of reclaiming it back from foreign rule.
The conflict between Costa Del Tesoro and Kings Landing reached its peak in the late 1600s when an epic battle known as the "Battle of the Crimson Tides" erupted off the coast of the two islands. This legendary sea battle, fought with cannon fire and cutlasses, ultimately ended in a stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
Over time, the pirate presence on Blackthorn’s Haven diminished, but the name and reputation persisted. Costa Del Tesoro and Blackthorn’s Haven coexisted, each with its own unique character and history. Today, visitors to Santa Laura can explore the retrofitted remnants of Fuerte Cortés, a testament to the island’s tumultuous past…
While this map is very pirate themed, it doesn’t look too out of place for more modern set ups, as you can easily just say that Costa Del Tesoro is just a bit behind the curve in terms of tech. Or just poor and isolationist. I prefer the headcanon of claiming it is currently under kestrel control, but you are more than welcome to think of whatever crazy story you want with the island. Feel free to explore the island, there are a few little nods to the history of the island, along with a secret jammed in there as well.
All in all, this map was a long time coming, considering it ate up effectively the entirety of the summer to construct, but hopefully in the end it was worth the wait.
