Description:

Mortal Kombat’s Iconic Cryomancer Ninja joins the Rivals of Aether Workshop, sporting his iconic sprites and moveset from UMK3!

(Disclaimer: This is my first Workshop mod. Feedback is highly appreciated)

// Background

Sub-Zero is the title belonging to the leader of the Chinese clan of assassins known as the Lin Kuei. His abilities to conjure ice magic are passed down by his bloodline. Sub Zero attended the Mortal Kombat tournament where he met his demise at the hands of Scorpion, a ninja spawned from hell seeking revenge for the murder of his wife and son.

// Playstyle

Sub-Zero is a defensive character who zones out the opponent with punishing freezing projectiles that lead to combos and devastating edge-guards. His tall frame makes him a large target for combos and his recovery is mediocre.

// Special Moves

Ice Ball (NSpecial / NSpecialAir / FSpecialAir) –
Ice Ball is a slow-moving projectile that briefly freezes the opponent with extended hit pause. Ice Ball takes up the slot of FSpecialAir similar to Smash 64’s lack of an FSpecial. The Aerial variation has a faster startup than the grounded one, but has less range and freeze time.

Slide (FSpecial) –
Slide allows Sub-Zero to quickly approach from a great distance. It’s unconventional knockback angle allows it to knock the opponent towards Ice Clones or offstage. Just like in Mortal Kombat, Slide stops on its tracks upon hit.

Ice Clone (DSpecial) –
Ice Clone spawns a life-sized ice statue of Sub-Zero that freezes the opponent on contact. Sub Zero also jumps back upon summoning it, granting a mobility option alongside stage control and denying recovery.
Note: Only one Ice Clone or Ice Ball can be present at a time, using Ice Ball will remove Ice Clone from the field.

Cryo Blast (USpecial) –
Sub-Zero is launched into the air by an icy explosion. It’s a recovery option with mediocre vertical distance, but its large and long-lasting hit box can be used to disrupt. It deals low damage and knockback.

// Notable Moves

Superman Punch (Fair) –
An original move, Superman punch has a slow startup and respectable knockback. It is mostly useful in the air or in an edge guarding situation.

Ninja Dive (Dair) –
An original move, a fast-falling kick. Sub-Zero dives down and delivers a soft spike throughout the duration of the move. If the spike connects, Sub-Zero bounces similarly to Greninja’s Dair. It also plays the iconic ‘6 Million Dollar Man’ sound effect, figuring it would be in line to Mortal Kombat’s influence from old action movies. Using Ninja Dive offstage is often a risk as you may lose an early stock in an attempt to spike the opponent.

Low Sweep (DStrong) –
Low Sweep has a low, long-reaching hitbox that trips the opponent on the ground and deals a soft spike on aerial targets. The move has set knockback and can combo into itself to emulate the Low Sweep spam tactics of MK1. The move cannot be charged.

Back Kick (FStrong) –
Back Kick serves as a secondary Ftilt with slightly longer reach and stronger knockback. It serves as a kill option in late percents and combo finishers. The move cannot be charged.

Uppercut (UStrong) –
A Mortal Kombat staple. Uppercut is Sub-Zero’s primary kill move that deals devastating knockback and damage, with punishing endlag. Freeze your opponent and follow up with an Uppercut for the classic Sub-Zero one-two! This is the only Strong that can be charged.

// To-do

– Dedicated visual effect when frozen by special moves.
– Dedicated USpecial sprite.
– Sound Effect when first selecting Sub-Zero, where Shao Kahn announces his name.
– Rebalancing.
– AI.
– Character trailer.

// Known Issues

– Occasionally, you are able to spawn two Ice Clones.
– Due to how the projectile deleting script is coded, Sub Zero will delete existing opponent projectiles when he shoots his own projectile.
– Game crashes when selecting Rivals of Fighters stage.
– Ice Ball to Aerial Ice Ball Infinite.
