Izu [Reforged]
SV, Core2 (99%), Unlock Level 12 (177 UP), Class 1
Starter SV / dip miner with light shield. Reforged Galaxy/Eden 1.10.
The Izu is a starter SV miner that is optimized for efficient planetary drilling. Its six drills are spread out at their maximum effective spacing meaning that you can carve out a very large chunk of ore in a single pass. It is intended to be used as a dip miner. This means that you should hover above the ore deposit, aim straight down, and make a series of dips into the terrain down to the ore. This tends to be faster and easier than trying to rotate around inside of a hole to scrape all of the ore off of the walls. The mechanical drills are very quick at mining rock so new dips don’t take long to expose the ore. It also makes it very easy to mine tungsten and silver deposits: do a series of preliminary dips to strip off the entire top layer of dirt over the nuggets to reveal their distribution, then go in after and mine out the now-exposed ore.
As a core2 spawn the Izu comes equipped with a light shield generator rather than a warp drive. This provides better protection while mining and when parked looting POIs, but obviously limits your access to early-game ores to your starter planet and surrounding moons. In many starts this isn’t an issue since you can build a warp-capable CV with salvage and loot found in the starter system. But if you intend to warp to another planet you will have to build an improved extender before you can install a warp drive.
The Izu is also a well-equipped starter SV. You have a comfortable interior space with access to 13k of storage, a constructor, and basic survival gear. You can launch your drone from safety by placing your back to the rear exit and deploying your drone through the open door. There are several upgrade options including a warp drive, thruster upgrades, additional turrets, two fixed weapons, and a number of shield upgrades. And despite its wide mining profile it is still small enough to fit through the smallest hangar door on your CV or base.
When deciding if this ship will work for you, also keep in mind it has its quirks. The pilot seat is offset on the left side of the craft, meaning that it takes some practice to line the ship up for drilling and landing. The drill spacing also occasionally results in a small sliver of ground not being cut, which requires slightly nudging the ship around before you can dig deeper. This was the cost of trying to maximize the excavation region on a core2 frame.
Also please be careful when using the cooktop. It was installed as an afterthought by marketing, who did not consult engineering as to the safest place to install a high-heat device.
All doors, passenger seats, and health devices are public by default. All storage and the pilot seat are private.
