Description:

Highly Configurable Undying Disaster

The returned are primarily meant to model the kind of "Vengeful Revenant" type of undead rather than the brain-eating zombie variety.

You absolutely can combine this with Zombieland. The Returned from this mod will be ignored by the zombies, and those about to turn into Returned will not rise as zombies.

Configurations:

Events
Vengeful Dead

Event has a chance of triggering at most once per day if someone died. (default 50%)

Only human-likes will reanimate.

Lasts for one day.

Unliving Nightmare

Event has a chance of triggering at most once per day if someone died. (default 20%)

When the event triggers any fresh and intact body has a chance of reanimating at half the normal chance.

Lasts for three days. Both animals and humans can reanimate. Might reanimate somewhat fresh dead bodies lying around.

By default much worse than the above. Noted as Nightmare below.

Reanimation Chances

All these settings are configurable in the mod options.

  • Reanimation chance: 20%
  • Reanimation chance: 50% (during Nightmare)
  • Reanimation chance: Colonists: 15% (checked after the above, can trigger outside of events)

Mental States

Configurable in the mod options.

  • Psychotic Wandering chance: 50% (only if none of the below trigger)
  • Manhunter risk: 33%
  • Manhunter risk: 75% (during Nightmare)
  • Chance to berserk instead of Manhunter: 75% (prevents permanent manhunter)
  • Risk that Manhunter is permanent: 50%
  • Risk that Manhunter is permanent: 50% (during Nightmare)
  • Risk that the returned’s faction is lost after manhunter/berserk: 50%
  • Risk that the returned’s faction is lost after manhunter/berserk: 50% (during Nightmare)

Pawns that lose their faction are added to a hidden Lost faction and will be hostile to everyone, including animals.

Returned

Those who are reanimated become Returned. If they still have their sanity intact they can still function as colonists, they eat less, but will degrade/age much slower.

They are completely numb, incredibly resistant to bullets, don’t bleed, and hard to kill properly again.

Unfortunately they heal extremely slowly, and tend to be lethargic. They can gain no comfort from comfy furniture or Lovin’. They are sterile and uninterested in Lovin’. Even if not disfigured, they have a unhealthy pallor which lowers their attractiveness.

They are highly resistant to bullets (and somewhat stabbing). Shooting them with shotgun buckshot is the WORST idea. Grab an axe or flamethrower.

Recommended Mods
Non uno Pinata

Highly recommended, makes it so pawns don’t lose their clothing when they die.

Compatibility
Zombieland

Returned have been coded so the manhunting variety of Returned will ignore the zombies, and the zombies will ignore them. Berserk Returned will of course still attack anyone and anything.

GIF showing some returned rising from the dead. Bullets and stabbing weapons are the least effective way of dealing with them, don’t be like the three fools in the gif. Bring an axe or fire.
