Description:

Play as the restorer of the Temple, Herod the Great; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.

The Romans first marched into withered Judea in 63 BC when Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus saw it fit for the the Republic to civilize those squabbling Hellenic despots that spoiled the fertile valleys of Palestine. It was through shrewd diplomacy that navigated a series of shifting alliances that the Idumeans under Antipater and later Herod the Great would prove their loyalty to the Romans. Their great Empire-in-the-West would shower the Jews with security at the small price of Imperial worship coupled with extravagant taxation. Though many Jews had already Hellenized and many more conformed to Roman will and even became citizens, there was no denying that an old guard of Jews loathed their pompous, pagan Roman overloads and their decadent Edomite dog-tetrarchs to the point of open rebellion… And apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for the Judaeans?
