Lumarians needed support inside the atmosphere. Gunships and any ground attack vehicle could be attacking ground like crazy without suffering any damage if Lumarians didn’t got this. This involves new technology, Engines! This engines can take down any ship, disabling any electronic device and also burning everything inside. This could penetrate any armor. Now, Lumarians will re use the AA Turret for other stuff like the Orbital Defense Platform.
