Lore
The Hannonic Coast

After the journey of Hanno the Navigator, the cities he founded continued to thrive with the support of Post Finem’s powerful Carthaginian empire. These cities developed a unique culture and controlled trade along the West African coast. Now, with a weakened Carthage, these trade routes have fallen into disrepair and the Hannonic Republics have almost completely submitted to their neighbors with the exception of Melitta. These cities receive extensive flavor and a large mission tree to help them survive and thrive, eventually evolving into the Hannonic League.

Karatia

In turn, the nations of West Africa are more developed and remained independent from Malian influence. These nations also received a new culture group (as well as a couple of Punic provinces) to reflect how their cultures have been influenced from a few centuries of Punic trade. Once their culture is united, they can form Karatia.

The Punic Vodun Faith

Punic Vodun, more commonly called Hanefarianism, will appear around the beginning of the 1500s. This new religion is a syncretic faith between traditional West African practices and the Punic faith, originating from the Karatians and founded by Muwoloch Hanefar. It utilizes the ancestor system from vanilla Totemism to simulate the possession of rulers by deities. The faith includes over 100 flavor events, varying by possession.

The faith also has a small but deadly disaster, featuring conflict between the Hanefarian state and the traditional West African "secret societies". This disaster, the Masquerade Rebellion, allows West Africans to gain a unique estate with interesting advantages and drawbacks. The disaster is extremely challenging and most players will need to compromise with rebels in order to survive (this is also more flavorful).

The First Bornu Jihad

Further to the east, the city of Borno has still converted to Islam as in our timeline, against all odds. However, this has sparked a civil war between Bornu and Kanem, which has remained entirely fetishist. The two will fight it out, deciding who will be the great Eastern rival to the Hanefarians in the West. If Kanem wins, they also receive extensive flavor for becoming Hanefarian, beginning with the visit of Muwoloch Hanefar to the city of Borno in the 1530s. If Bornu wins, they can spread Islam across West Africa and challenge Zulfaar for control over the Islamic world.

Tuareg Menace

The Tuareg nations at the start of the game (Kel Buktu, Kel Adagh, Kel Air, and Kel Gres) have received significant flavor, including a unique mission tree, multiple decisions and flavor events, a unique tributary subject, and a unique government reform which allows them to raze provinces. If they play their cards right, they could quickly rise dominate the Sahara with their powerful cavalry raiding, especially with their declining neighbors. The Tuareg Infamy mechanic also gives them powerful bonuses, provided they can keep their tributaries.

The Remains of Ghana

In our timeline, the Ghana Empire was destroyed upon the rise of Islam. Then, its successor state of Susu (Sosso, Soussou, etc.) was also destroyed by a Muslim coalition. In the timeline of Post Finem, the Ghana Empire lasted centuries longer, leaving an even stronger impression upon the region. When the empire collapsed, two powers rose to fill the vacuum, Susu and Mali. In 1444, both Susu and Mali face a crisis of legitimacy, as they have fought over the former Ghana Empire for nearly 100 years with no conclusion. If either empire can navigate out of the disaster, they have the option to form "Great Ghana".

Their neighbors have other plans. One such neighbor is the kingdom of Jenne, which has a unique mission tree and government reform. Within Mali, the nobles of Diarra are also planning to end the war for Ghana, once and for all.

Other West African Flavor

Due to the lack of Islam in this timeline, West African history would look different. This mod tries to remove/edit references to Islam and the empire of Mali in existing vanilla flavor, so that it corresponds to Legacy of Hanno canon. If you discover any vanilla flavor which really doesn’t make sense while playing, please tell me so I can edit it.
