Improved Roman Animations and Formations Mod
NOTE: compatible with other mods, ask for overhauls
This mod adds a NEW roman ‘shield wall’ (with improved animations) ability/formation, called ‘roman formation’. ‘Roman formation’ improves the organisation/cohesiveness of troops in combat. See the screenshots for reference! The ability can also be used during marching. IMO, it makes legionaries look epic. I’ve seen Rome battle AI do this consistantly & effectively, which is good! Also, defensive and attacking testudo has been added for all legionary units.
[Gameplay Changes]: Added "roman formation". With this ability, Roman legion infantry will form an organised formation. The ability stays ON during combat, walking and running. Infantry stay in formation during combat better! Legionaries can also now use ‘defensive testudo’, ‘hollow square’ and ‘attacking testudo’.
[Animation Changes]: In combat with ‘roman formation’ ON, infantry at the rear ranks will hold their shields up. Soldiers at the front ranks will be in a combat ready stance. Also improved the ‘defensive testudo’ ability.
ALSO, I’ve tweaked the "charge" of legionaries, so that it is more organised/cohesive and smooth flowing. Firstly, the front rows will run ahead and throw pilum, and smoothly transition back to charging melee with the rest of the unit.
Balance:
Combat effectiveness has been tested in game and it’s balanced. ‘Roman formation’ makes legionaries form a tight, organised formation, which is effective against barbarian hordes to well trained soldiers.
Dont use Roman formation against phalanx of hoplites or pikemen… it’s just illogical.
Tactics/pro tips:
It’s possible to charge (throw pilum) and then turn "roman formation" ON during combat. The transition is smooth.

CHANGELOG:
1. added an extra ‘defensive testudo’ ability (with improved animations), which basically looks like the real typical testudo (see screenshot).
2. now there’s attacking testudo, defensive testudo and roman formation.
3. added ‘hollow square’ for legionaries, a new ability not in the original game
4. Improved charge animation for legionaries.
NOTE: updates are save game compatible.
