Hulao Pass · World Wonder
Hulao Pass is an ancient mountain pass in Sishui, Henan, its name Hulao (“Tiger Cage”) was said to stem from the legends that King Mu of Zhou kept tigers there. With Mount Song to the south and the Yellow River to the north, this mountain pass was a strategic position of the Central Plains and has been a target of conflicts since ancient times. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Zhuang of Zheng was requested by his mother to grant the land of Zhi to his younger brother, but he refused as Zhi, later known as Hulao Pass, was a strategic stronghold. During the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, the Former Yan asked for military support from Former Qin on the condition of ceding Hulao, yet reneged the promise after the war ended. In response, Fu Jian, Heavenly King of Great Qin, sent Wang Meng to lead the troops to conquer Former Yan. At the end of the Sui Dynasty, Li Shimin defeated the coalition army of 110,000 soldiers under Wang Shicong and Dou Jiande with his 3,500 cavalry at the Battle of Hulao, laying the foundation of the Tang Dynasty. Nonetheless, Hulao Pass was best known for the Romance of Three Kingdoms: It was here that Dong Zhuo’s formidable general Lü Bu defeated many enemy officers in consecutive duels, and fought against Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei at the same time. Nonetheless, the Three Heroes Fighting Lü Bu at Hulao Pass, like Guan Yu Slaying Hua Xiong at Sishui Pass, was merely a fictional story (in fact, Hulao Pass and Sishui Pass were two names referring to the same mountain pass).
“The natural barrier divides the lands, a creation beyond mortal comprehension.
At the convergence of three Jins, a partition over Rivers‘ ascension.
Snow remained on wilted grass, winds blew away broken weeds.
Beholding an old battlefield, contemplating what a war reaps.”– Sima Guang, Hulao Pass

Lü Bu was one of the most formidable generals of the Three Kingdoms Period, known for his martial prowess and traitorous nature. He earned the title “Flying General” for his excellence in mounted archery. He originally served Ding Yuan, but was bribed by Dong Zhuo and killed Ding Yuan, and they vowed as sworn father and son. Lü Bu fought against the coalition army against Dong Zhuo, but animosity grew between the two. Lü Bu had a secret affair with one of Dong Zhuo‘s maids. Fearing the affair would leak, he was persuaded by Wang Yun to assassinate Dong Zhuo (in the fictional Romance of Three Kingdoms, it was portrayed that Wang Yun sent his foster daughter Diaochan to sow dissension between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu). Lü Bu became an independent force and traveled among warlords. He accepted Liu Bei’s request to defend Xuzhou, but later betrayed and claim Xuzhou himself. When Yuan Shu attacked Liu Bei, Lü Bu stunned Yuan Shu‘s army with his archery skill, by successfully hitting the curved blade of a ji with an arrow. However, his wavering loyalty made him a thorn in the eyes of all factions. In 197, Cao Cao allied with Liu Bei to besiege the city of Xiapi. Lü Bu was betrayed by his subjects and eventually executed by Cao Cao.
