Type A Kō-hyōteki Mini Submarine by Uncle T
This is a sort of working version of the Type A Kō-hyōteki Mini Submarine that Japan used in the attacks on Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941 and Sydney harbour 31 May – 1 June 1942.
It’s definitely an approximation, not a 1:1 replica.
It had a crew of 2 and was armed with 2 muzzle-loaded Type 97 450 mm torpedoes, and a 140 kg scuttling charge.
The crew were not seated in the tower but there’s no room down below because of the diving mechanism (things still clip through Bob).
Number 19 was grounded on a beach on Oahu after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Building a submarine that can both submerge and resurface in Brick Rigs is, to me at least, a very delicate balancing act, like walking a not at all tight rope while being pelted with sandbags and the occasional giant fan blasting you from unknown directions.
So this one works but needs a lot of input and attention when going under to keep it level and at the desired depth. But it works, at least decently.
It floats just on the surface and can submerge and resurface. To make this work however I have had to add several control surfaces that were not on the original (it only had the rudder and diving vanes at the stern), and the propeller had to be moved down since water and air are the same in this game and if the propeller even approaches the surface it thinks the whole thing is a plane and starts shifting and pulling the whole thing around. Should this happen just stop and the sub should re-balance itself after a few seconds.

W: Throttle. No variable throttle this time since I wanted to be able to reverse.
S: Reverse.

X/Invert Steering: Periscope up/down.
PgUp-PgDn/Auxiliary: Turn periscope.
Fire action 1/Num 1: Torpedo 1 (top). ***
Fire action 2/Num 2: Torpedo 2 (bottom). ***
Fire action 8/Num 8: Scuttling charge.
Camera 1: Periscope.
Camera 2: Torpedo 1.
Camera 3: Torpedo 2
*When turning some adjustments to the roll axle might be needed. Think of it as flying a plane almost – roll a little into the turn then start turning and adjust when necessary.
** Gain some speed before trying to dive to avoid the prop-in-the-air issue.
*** The torpedoes are best fired from the surface. You can fire them at full speed but due to the interesting physics they can sometimes get "caught" in the water for a few seconds so turning a little after firing might be prudent.
The torpedoes thrusters work for about 70 seconds and the torpedo self destructs after 85 seconds.
They can be fired from a fully submerged submarine but they will take time to "float" to the surface and will move very little in the meantime. The thrust on them is designed for working at the surface where part of the torpedo is above the surface and so it moves a lot quicker. If I set the thrust to move quickly fully submerged the torpedo runs a sever risk of turning into an unguided missile when breaching the surface.
