Description:

After the victory at the Battle of Actium, Marcus Agrippa commissioned the construction of a number of buildings, including the Pantheon. The Pantheon is remarkable for not only its massive size, but also the elegant design of its portico and dome. The portico consists of 16 monolithic columns transported all the way from Egypt. The concrete dome held the record of being the largest dome in the world for more than 13 centuries until it was surpassed by Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. The Pantheon used to commemorate the Roman deities until it was converted into a Catholic church. Nonetheless, the Pantheon is the best-preserved Roman building, and its portico-and-dome form of the Pantheon inspired numberless buildings all around the world.
