Description:

This is a re-upload of the earlier Landowner Self-Strengthening mod due to issues with the Steam workshop.

A small mod with potentially-large effects: Landowner Self-Strengthening adds a Journal Entry that adds the Self-Strengthening ideology to landowner interest groups in the following circumstances:

  1. The country has Serfdom and/or Traditionalism.
  2. The country has discovered Nationalism and 1 year has passed since its discovery.

This ideology overrides default Landowner interest group preferences and causes them to prefer Agrarianism over Traditionalism and Tenant Farming over Serfdom. This change represents autocrat-led modernizing reforms as seen in Russia under Alexander II and – in the 1700s – in Austria, Bohemia, France, Hungary, Baden, and so on. While this mod doesn’t intend for Landowners to become a slightly different flavor of Industrialists, the idea that landowners (and particularly conservative autocrats) wanted to maintain the feudal status quo of serfdom and medieval agrarianism isn’t well-founded in historical fact. Rather, moneyed elites (even those who owned land) began to understand by the mid-1800s that economic reform was necessary to maintain any degree of competitiveness with their national rivals.

Encouraging the AI to move off of Serfdom and Traditionalism allows for better AI country economic development. Agrarianism and Tenant Farmers solves crippling issues with Market Access Price Impact, pop qualifications, and (to a lesser degree) reinvestment that AI countries will often retain through the end of the game in unmodded Victoria 3. As shown in the screenshots above, this can also lead to the sort of dynamic development that Paradox likely intended, as economic development and changes in Pop wealth leads to interest group clout changes over the course of the game.

For even more dynamic economic and political behavior, the Victoria Tweaks Mod is largely compatible with this mod. Mods which massively overhaul the Victoria 3 interest group system will likely NOT be compatible with this mod.
