Lore
gm_born is located in an industrial harbour area in the coasts, before the events of Half-Life 2. The Combine have won the war and are establishing their bases on the broken earth.
Citizens from all around the world have been taken by the combine, and this harbour has become abandoned. Now it serves as refuge for citizen outlaws who have broken free. They believe in an uprising against the combine’s reign, and a rebellion; that shall be born.
Before abandonment, the industrial harbour had gone through many decades of construction and company ownerships. Old buildings were not renovated, and new buildings were established on unsuitable foundations.
The last company before the 7 Hour War was a chemical / pharmaceutical distributor and manufacturer. They were infamous for human rights violations, mass pollution and inconsiderate waste disposal. They were by far, the worst out of the many. Over time, birds were seen having maniacal behaviour and employees reported hallucinations and insanity.
In the years leading up to the Combines invasion, the company was under heavy toll from lawsuits and lack of employees. They ended up filing bankruptcy with no buyers of the land due to its condition. The company owner later died of a seizure and without money, the company abandoned all storage and documents.
Leaving the chemical waste to rot.
Over time, the chemical waste polluted the earth under the harbour. This pollution kept away antlions and aliens, even the Combine didn’t bother. The harbour’s inventory of resources and lack of aliens is what drove rebels to the harbour. Well knowing of the pollution, but not the biohazard.
The chemical waste not only threatened the survivability of the creatures, aliens and rebels, but also their psyche. As a rebel, the outcome of living in the harbour meant one of to things: you either die to the pollution, or live long enough to feel its effects. As you know from the posters, "Born" means everything to this specific community of rebels who resided in the harbour. The community’s leader started the religion of Born, believing in the second coming of The One Free Man.
The harbour was now home to the community, and they would soon find out why it was abandoned.
The community devolved into a cult from the pollution, causing insanity and escalating their beliefs.
Those who died to the pollution were deemed sacrifices and those who opposed the enthusiastic cultists were executed.
The spiral of death and sacrifice led to the end of the cult, leading the harbour abandoned once again. Derelict, but now a playground for the modders of Garry
