4M GAZ-AAA
In July 1928, the GAU Art Committee instructed the design bureau of the Tula Arms Factory to design and build a coupled, built-up and quadruple anti-aircraft machine guns based on Maksim machine guns. Despite a number of shortcomings (heavy weight, difficulty in separate loading, etc.), the winner of the internal competition was the team of the famous designer-gunsmith NF. Tokarev. The quadruple installation was adopted in service in 1931 and received the designation 4M. In total, about 12,000 anti-aircraft installations of this type were launched, which were operated until the end of 1945.
A large mass of the construction naturally raised the question of transferring it to a self-propelled chassis. For this purpose, trucks of increased cross-country capacity GAZ-AAA were chosen. No booking was made. The calculation was carried in the body together with the ammunition. The first samples of anti-aircraft guns entered service in the mid-1930’s. and in the pre-war period 4M GAZ-AAA became the most mass self-propelled anti-aircraft system.
