During and after the French war in Indochina, the Vietnamese captured great numbers of MAT-49 SMGs. Some would be used as they were, but many were converted to 7.62mm Tokarev, since that was a caliber that was easily available to the Viet Minh and later the NLFSV. These weapons would also be shipped to other struggling anti-colonial groups, such as the Algerian resistance.
