The XM177 was a shortened version of the M16 rifle, meant to be used by the US military and special forces during the Vietnam War. It could be mounted with the XM148 grenade launcher, Colt’s underbarrel grenade launcher meant to allow grenadiers to carry a primary gun, instead of an M79 with an M1911 pistol. In this case, the sight is removed as most XM148s used in Vietnam were used in that configuration, reducing the bulk of the already hard to handle and maintain implement.
