Description:
U.S.S 423 ‘Torsk’

Description:
The Tench-Class submarine was the final submarine class to be developed during the Second World War. Taking the knowledge gained from the previous ‘Gato’ and ‘Balao’ class submarines, the Tenches were born. Put into service late into the war, the U.S.S Torsk encountered her first target, a minelayer on the 2nd of June, 1945, firing six torpedoes which missed their target. The U.S.S Torsk wouldn’t have much luck until August of 1945 when she received the new Mark 28 homing torpedo where she would sink a Japanese Kaibōkan frigate. Her last prey, another Kaibōkan frigate, would be hit by both her Mark 28 and Mark 27 torpedoes, causing a massive explosion and rapidly sinking the vessel. The Torsk’s final kill on said frigate would prove to be the final Japanese vessel sunk during the Second World War. The Torsk currently stands as part of Baltimore’s Historic Fleet in Baltimore, MD, USA, alongside the lightship Chesapeake, the last built sail-only US sloop-of-war USS Constellation, and the final floating warship that fought in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USCGC Taney.
