Description:

From Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, Scream Tail joins Rivals of Aether!

Being the Paradox version of Jigglypuff, its moveset is very similar to Jigglypuff’s Smash Bros. moveset, but a few unique moves and different traits set Scream Tail apart. Compared to Jigglypuff, Scream Tail is faster overall and a little heavier but less floaty and with only 2 midair jumps instead of 5.

Now, let’s go over some of its moves and how they differ from Jigglypuff:

Up Special: Sunny Day / Flamethrower

While grounded, Scream Tail summons rays of harsh sunlight from above. While in them, Scream Tail’s Protosynthesis will activate, boosting its attack power. This also affects some of its other moves in certain ways, as will be explained below.

While in the air, Scream Tail will instead use Flamethrower, spewing fire downwards to propel itself upwards. It’s somewhat weak, but as a fire type move, its damage output under the sun is greatly increased.

Neutral Special: Gyro Ball

Since Scream Tail is unable to learn Rollout like Jigglypuff can, it uses Gyro Ball instead. Rather than slowly charging to increase its speed and power, Gyro Ball has a tap version and a hold version, the former being faster but weaker, while the latter is slower but stronger. This is in reference to how the move functions in the Pokemon games, dealing greater damage the slower the user is.

After hitting an opponent or bumping into a wall with this move, Scream Tail will bounce back a bit. This can be useful for recovering against walls (as long as you don’t mess up the b-reverse after wall-jumping).

If Protosynthesis is active, the hold version will travel as fast as the tap version, but it will still have slightly longer startup.

Forward Special: Pound

This move is very similar to Jigglypuff’s version; a simple, straight punch. Just like Jigglypuff’s version, this move can be angled up or down when used in the air. Compared to Jigglypuff’s version, it travels a little further.

Down Special: Rest

Any platform fighter veteran should be well aware of what this move does – it’s an instantaneous, very powerful attack with a very small hitbox and extremely long endlag. However, Scream Tail’s version is somewhat weaker than Jigglypuff’s, and it’s based on the Brawl and onward version which launches opponents upwards rather than outwards.

Despite this, Scream Tail’s version is unique since Protosynthesis will reduce the amount of time Scream Tail will stay asleep after using the move. (I mean, have you ever tried to sleep while out in the sun? It’s not easy.) In addition, the power boost from Protosynthesis can nullify the move’s lower power compared to Jigglypuff’s version.

Other moves of note:

Up tilt:
Instead of a rising kick behind it like Jigglypuff’s up tilt, Scream Tail flicks its hair… tail… thing above it. This provides the move with significantly greater range than Jigglypuff’s, and it acts as an excellent combo starter.

Up air:
Rather than a slow sweep like Jigglypuff’s up air, Scream Tail performs a quick overhead swipe. This move is somewhat weak for the most part, but there’s a powerful sweetspot right at the top. This makes this move a viable kill option, especially with the Protosynthesis power boost.
