Do you get tired of managing millions of troops later on in the game? Do you want to have a bunch of loyal subjects to govern your land for you, come to your wars, do the boring carpet sieges, and supply you with merchants and trade bonuses just like trade companies? Then, this mod is exactly for you.
What does this mod do?This mod introduces a highly integrated, trade-focused subject type: Protectorates of the Crown.
Core Features of Crown Protectors:
- No Diplomatic Slots: They do not occupy any diplomatic relations slots.
- Autonomous yet Helpful: They govern your provinces and aid you in wars (you can enable scutage to keep them out of your conflicts).
- Subject Hierarchy: They are allowed to have their own subjects (like colonies or appanages).
- Diplomatic Isolation (New Mechanic): By default, they can autonomously declare wars and ally with other nations. However, you can use a diplomatic action to turn them into an "Isolated Crown Protector". This physically revokes their right to wage war or form alliances. Doing so will anger them, causing a -50 opinion penalty (decaying over time) and +15 Liberty Desire. You can restore their rights anytime.
Dynamic Scaling System (The Burden of Empire):To balance the immense power of having countless subjects, a background scaling system dynamically calculates the total development of all your Crown Protectors every year:
- Administrative Burden: As your subjects grow, they put a heavy strain on your bureaucracy. You will receive a scaling penalty to your Governing Capacity (starting gently, but reaching up to a massive -99% at 50,000+ total subject development).
- Trade Dominance: To offset this burden, their massive trade networks will supply you with extra Merchants based on their development (scaling up to +39 Merchants).
- The mod notifies you with an event whenever your empire crosses a new threshold in this scaling system.

Creation Requirements:To establish a Protector of the Crown through diplomacy, the following conditions must be met:
- Target nation must already be your subject (Vassals, Marches, PUs, Colonies, etc. – see images for full list).
- Target nation must be loyal (Liberty Desire under 50%).
- Target nation must have at least 0 opinion of you.
- Target nation’s total development must be strictly lower than your total development.
- You must be at least a Kingdom (Government Rank 2 or higher).
- You must spend 5 Administrative, 5 Diplomatic, and 5 Military power to establish the administration.
My RecommendationsI highly recommend using this mod alongside Coloured Subjects. It changes your Crown Protectors’ map color to match yours, giving your decentralized empire a unified, aesthetic look similar to Ottoman Eyalets.
Is it compatible with other mods?100% YES. The mod has been designed to be completely non-destructive. It does not overwrite or modify any vanilla game files. You can safely use it with any major overhaul or flavor mod without causing conflicts.
Is it compatible with Ironman / Achievements?No. Because this mod adds new mechanical features and subjects, it changes the checksum and is not compatible with Ironman achievements.
