(Commission) USS Cairo
City-class casemate ironclad used by Union forces during The American Civil War
Built in Mound City, Illinois in 1861, Cairo was a part of Union’s Western Gunboat Flotilla, which took part in capturing of Fort Pillow from the confederate forces. Cairo was sunk by a confederate mine, being the first ever ship in history to be sunk by a electric operated mine. It was later recovered and turned into a Museum that you can now visit in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
