Description:

5000+ Retextures!

"Why? why does the apocalypse look so CLEAN? WHY IT LOOKS LIKE AN IKEA ROOM?"

A Complete retexture of zomboid world

Important notes

  • How to use it:
1-Enable beauty of Zomboid base mod
2-Enable Dense environment addon from this mod – Credits to mazisky for original code
3-Enable either grass 1 or 2 depending on your tastes
  • This is technically a lightweight mod, the texture replacements use the same pixels amount as original game, the desne environment addon may impact performance a bit!
  • It works with maniks 10+ years later, but choose your load order to see wich one you want priority
  • This uses a modified version of dense environment on it`s own, dont use it along with the original
  • By selecting on ~workshop~ tab you automatically selected the correct versions for your server
  • It should be fine to install it mid playtrough

  • It has a couple issues still like, whitelines where i forgot to overpaint, some props connecting with blacklines in the middle, but nothing gamebreaking, i tested it for about some days on a normal playtrough

After going trough a surgery and having 15 days to rest and chill, I came across the idea: What if zomboid tiles were better? the game still looks like from 2007, why are there almost no mods to improve textures and make the quality of them better? Also Devs seem to have prioritized the mechanics updates, So I began this project! to make zomboid look better.

What first was intended as a kitchen prop-apocalypse remake now is a complete retexture/re-render/improvement/paintover in almost all zomboid tiles and textures, I made sure to make the textures fit both a vanilla and post-10 year later Runs, so you`re good with both! everything has been re-rendered, with AI assisted renders and photoshop manual overpainting, with some years of concept art industry knowledge to back it all up! Almost everything has had a retexture, trees, floors, houses, grass, dirt, containers and props.

How many people are working with you on this?

Me, 5 cans of monster energy, a cintiq wacom and an rtx 3060ti

Does this kills my FPS?

In theory no! every texture is still the same amount of pixels and weight of the original ones, just overall better art direction now, no upscaling(I tried but the game doesnt let you go beyond a certain amount of pixels per tile)

Is it buggy?

It`s more than 5000+ retextures, bugs will appear, sometimes white lines between tiles I forgot to overpaint, or a repeating pattern looking way to uncomfortable, but nothing that should break your save or that I wont update later, feels free to tell me repeating textures or things i didn`t notice.

You cant improve the graphics it can`t render volume and shadows!!

Partially right, It doesnt have a modern render engine, but that doesn`t mean volume cant be faked with well positioned painted ambient occlusion and good render passes on props, but not too much that would deviate from the game original art style, I had to be really carefull with that.

How is this different from manik 10 years retexture?

Manik didn`t touch sprites or structure of props, yet manik overlayed textures on top of basegame pre-created sprites, in my case im trying to go a step further and completely remake some of the tiles and props, trough AI + Paintover techniques used in concept art industry

What are parts that are hard to improve?

Right now the big three is
1- Floors( they are square tiles put near each other, if i apply a texture it needs to be seamless other wise it looks horrendous, I want to find a way to integrate scripting to create more variety on floor but that`s for later
2-Repeating tiles, same problem as floors, i need to be really conservative on the texture and render of those
3- Ambient occlusion, needs to be done manually in order to have great results, and I can only have a confirm every time i open the game, enter and see the prop myself and If I painted the occlusion right, Doing this with trees right now because they`re less amount in comparison to other props

What are the other mods in your pictures??

Currently there are some other mods I recommend, and were intended to be run along with this
they are:
